Pete Matthews Wheel Building Services

Pete Matthews also known as the master wheel builder, is based in the city of Liverpool in the Northwest of England. Pete has raced and won in more than 300 races in a 52-year amateur career and 20 national titles – including Amateur National Road Race Champion in 1968. Pete started building wheels through necessity which later became a passion. At only fourteen he would repair and build his own wheels. When Pete started racing he became frustrated and felt restricted with what was commercially available, in terms of rims and hubs.

Pete soon gained a respectful reputation within the racing world for pushing boundaries and his understanding of wheel construction. He has made wheels for many professional riders. One rider that does stand out for him is the cycling legend Robert Millar (Pippa York). Robert asked for some special lightweight wheels to be used in the Tour de France espicially for climbing. Robert Miller exclusively used Pete’s wheels in the late 1980s until he retired. It led to commissions from other riders like Sean Yates, Sid Barras and, more recently, Jeremy Hunt, Michael Hutchinson and Wendy Houvenaghel.

Pete Matthews wheel building service is completely bespoke. He takes into account your height and weight into consideration and what the wheels are going to be used for.
